Östermalms Saluhall, also called Östermalmshallen or Hallen for short, is located in the Riddaren quarter at the corner of Nybrogatan and Humlegårdsgatan facing Östermalmstorg on Östermalm in central Stockholm.

Östermalmshallen’s interior is a marketplace for the public in food and delicacies. The hall is accessed via five different gates. In addition, there are a number of premises with direct entrance from the street. Östermalm’s Saluhall is owned and managed by the Saluhall Administration through the City of Stockholm’s real estate office.

The hall was built in a very short construction time in 1888 under the auspices of Aktiebolaget Östermalms Saluhallar AB, with the purpose: “to build and rent out sales halls and other apartments in Östermalm in Stockholm.”

The articles of association were established on March 23, 1888.

The share capital in 1901 was SEK 550,000, and the board that year consisted of, among others, bank directors Johan Henrik Palme and Carl Cervin.

The approximately 3,000 m² hall was inaugurated on 30 November 1888 in the presence of King Oscar II. At that time, only six months had passed from the start of construction to completion.

In part, 300 to 500 men were employed in the record building. On December 1, Östermalm’s Saluhall opened its doors to the public and Stockholm had its own temple for the culture and preservation of good food.

Everyone who valued good food and fine ingredients soon came here. Chefs, chefs and very ordinary people queued on equal terms at their favorites of the many talented traders and it is still like that today.
